The Vital Role of Certified Translation Services for International Students

With the ever-increasing level of globalization, not only are the Entertainment and Manufacturing Industries affected, Higher Education is one of the few non-profits that arguably should operate with a for-profit mindset when it comes to keeping enrollment rates steady or increasing. One way is to tap into International students, they are a great source of growth for American universities and universities around the world. Nowadays, students are more open to travel, live abroad, and experience other languages and cultures.

Speaking of enrollment rates, did you know that according to InternationalStudent.com “the USA has the world’s largest international student population,” and “Nearly 4% of all students enrolled in higher level education in the USA are international students”?  That number has been growing over time. Certified Translation Services for educational documents are required to facilitate the application process. Academic translations that the students need include: transcript translation, diploma translation and in some cases syllabus translation. Educational institutions also need a wide range of educational translation such as translation of the university website, online portal for students, and marketing material to facilitate application and registration processes while aiming at a wider range of applicants.

Why is Educational Translation Important?

If you have gone through the grueling process of college applications, you will likely recall the various documents requested such as medical records, transcripts, letters of recommendation and other sensitive records, each bearing their own weight in the application process. An extra layer of complexity exists if the originals are in another language like Spanish, German or Japanese.

Think about a student going to a school abroad, like a Japanese University, can you imagine if several subjects were mistranslated while he was applying at a highly selective Japanese university he wanted to go to all his life? Can you visualize admissions trying to make sense of the transcript and reading the recommendation letter after a bad quality English into Japanese translation? That is the critical role of the quality and accuracy of the certified translation of your documents.

If this scenario bothered you, you can only imagine the frustration that students in third-world countries like Haiti or Cambodia feel when they are trying to find a way to get their application materials translated from French Creole or Khmer when applying to an American institution. They themselves feel confident in their English skills, but remain unauthorized to do their own translation of their transcripts since they need to be made by a third party, that guarantees and certifies the translation.

In my own personal experience, when coming to high school in the United States, my transcripts were misunderstood to the point that I was placed in the wrong grade, repeating classes that I had just finished. What is worse, some credits did not transfer because the course titles were not understood by my counselor or the District’s Placement Center. My experience is a good example of the relevance of educational translation.

Educational content, course names and course content vary around the world, so a professional and accurate translation of educational records, courses, diplomas and educational certificates is paramount for successfully applying to universities in an international setting between countries of different languages.

Why Expand the Applicant Pool?

International students are a key component to diversifying not only the demographics but the ideas held at institutions of higher learning. International students are a new refreshing component to the climate and culture of the host institution, thus exposing both local and international students to diverse languages, food, religion, customs, and cultures which broadens their understanding of the world.
